There is usually a way to do what you want to do. Whether you are a radio producer or farmer or trying to learn blues guitar, resources are seldom the problem. Try resourcefulness. I have had a thousand conversations with other producers who agree that our job is so invisible and so behind the scenes that the audience and the management we work for doesn’t have a clue what went into the finished product and that’s part of the job. Every now and then, creativity and its process gets a spotlight. Here’s a speed guitar player who defies the odds. Here you go.
Farson, in his great book, “Management of the Absurd” talks about creativity and how the very structure of systems discourages true creativity. He gives the example of a child coloring. True creativity might inspire a child to color down the side of the desk and onto the floor, out the window and up a tree to join colors. But that would be frowned upon, huh? Granted we do need limits and parameters as guidelines. But when a breakthrough occurs, you can bet there is someone thinking outside the box. Radio producers need to be reminded now and then. It can be inspiring and freeing to know that the sky is the limit… or not.
